A
Quick Look
See, I do have to write the standings at least occasionally,
if only just to keep my hand in. Despite being at least within
striking distance of the lead, I haven’t been following
things too closely (it’s still very early). Frankly, I
was shocked to see John Kardel “Stewart”
in the lead. Has that ever happened before? One game back, Ellen’s
mom, Mrs. Raimondo (aka Mrs. Cap’n
Dom) appears to have finally gotten over Tino Martinez’s
move to St. Louis and is putting her new-found energy into football
prognostication (now only if Ron Hade could
follow suit…). Michelle “Honey” Brown
and Mike “Whole” Hogg have been
spotted lurking just a few games behind.
It’s
nice to see a few familiar names in the top 15; some known for
past FBH fame and victory and some for spectacular blow-outs.
Interesting to see Boobie and Mellenhead
have the same record (ah…togetherness) while Brandi
is just ahead of Tommy (and it will stay that
way as long as Tommy insists on picking R. L. Turner every week).
Tom “LeDaffy” LeDuc powered an
11-3 to catch up to son “Big” Zack “Attack”
LeDuc before things got unruly. Nobody else broke into
double figures in wins last week.
The
ol’ Home teams just ain’t what they used to be.
And if you’re picking them, neither is your record. Funny
how that home team default debate never gets started at times
like this…
With
still two weeks to go in the second quarter… the tightly
contested Puzzle division is still anyone’s
horserace. AHF-ers are led by Senor
Kardel with the Sonya and Ralph
Show just two out. (Which one’s getting help from the
dog?) Will “The Cubs ever win?” Wong
trails Mrs. Cap'n Dom by two games in the El
Subliminoso division and Mark “Pick of the Week”
Vanek has a slim one game lead in dadaland.
By
the way, if you haven’t checked which division is ruling
the roost (and is the only one with a combined average above
.500) check it out.
Remember,
you’ve got an extra hour to make those picks this week,
so get cranking and good luck!

Forever
Our own private Idaho
Texas
dada pilgrims got a big soul kiss last weekend as our beloved
band’s tour stopped in Austin on Friday and Dallas on
Saturday. Jame and Kelly (AKA
“who put on the goddamn pukin’ dada?”) get
high marks for being in attendance for both shows.
The
Dallas scene was very intimate, almost surreal. The venue was
Greenville Avenue’s cozy but legendary Poor David’s
Pub. A private party kept the club closed until just before
the 11PM show time, and advertising beyond the band’s
web site was non-existent, so the crowd was very limited. Those
of us lucky enough to be there, however, got blasted with a
wave of pure vibe that was more than enough to fill up flagging
soul reservoirs.
After
the show, the three group members even came out, spoke with
the faithful and anointed the unwashed. Good guys, even if they
are Californians. A cover charge, three CDs and two silly hats
later, I was ready to follow them to Saint Louis.

Coming Next Week
This week's issue is a little short because, oh yes,
it's that time of year again. Halloween is next Friday and so
that means it's time for what will be our 6th Annual FBH Costume
party! Whether you know it or not, many of you are busy getting
your costumes ready. I have several ideas and concepts floating
around my creative mind, but even I don't know what to expect
any more than you do. Other than the same batch of characters
we've come to know and love thru the years. Ever wonder why
you see the same people every year? It's because they're the
only people I have photos of. Want to see yourself in costume?
No? I don't blame you. But just in case you do, this would be
a great time to email me a photo!! I make no promises with what
I'll do with it, or that I'll even use it at all (I'll seriously
try tho). Or if you have an idea for a costume, either for you
or someone else, please let me know and I'll see what I can
do.

tell us the new NFL channel is coming in November. My question is,
why not in September? Exactly what wasn’t ready? Couldn’t
they just have put on a bunch of old NFL Films and Game of the Weeks?
[
This Saturday, nationally ranked #94 Rutgers travels to Philadelphia
to take on #95 Temple in high-wattage battle of college football
powerhouses. (No word on when the #93 San Diego State vs. #96 Tulsa
game is scheduled.)
[
Completing the daily double, those Mighty Jets follow the Knights
into the City of Brotherly Love to tangle with the Eagles. Why exactly
am I not there to enjoy it with my good friend and long-time Philly
FBH correspondent, Angelo “Sheehy” Forgione?
I suppose the lack of planning was spurred on by lackluster production
by the respective combatants. Good luck, anyway, green bird!
[
When I originally gave Ralphie Captain America’s
pick formula, I had it backwards so, later, I told him to reverse
it. In the granddaddy of “don’t change your first pick”
lessons, I thereby turned a 56-42-4 record (5 games back) into a
42-56-4 record (19 games back). Alas, nothing can “shield”
me from the disappointment.
[
The end of daylight savings time and the Dallas weather dipping below
90 degrees can only mean one thing…the annual FBH Halloween
issue is due next week. Please get those creepy yet creative ideas
together. Ricky “Bones Boy” AssCommish
is ready for anything, even just stuff he can use for his creations.
[
Blast from the FBH past Cindy “Lou Who” Hibbard
wafted back into our lives this week dispelling inaccuracies I had
been spreading about her (like she had moved to Finland 5 years
ago never to be seen or heard from again). I’m happy to report
she is back in Dallas, a burgeoning triathlete, no less.
[
I’ve got a problem with the Dallas Stars’ new “third”
uniforms. [See
one here] Some say the constellation on the front maps
out the female reproductive system, but I’m not on that bandwagon.
My issue lies not with the design, but with the use of the color red
when their historic team colors are green, black, white and gold.
Does management need to be reminded that the Stars’ archrivals
are the RED Wings? My belief is, to paraphrase my bongo-playing friend
Bob the Drummer, “The only red in a Dallas
Stars jersey should be Sergei Zubov.”
In last week's P on the PP, we asked for
your Predictions for the 2003 World Series. We got a sporadic response,
in so much that some people picked just the team, some chose just
the number of games, while most chose both. Here's the results:
The
consensus said Yankees in 6 Games. 12 people said that exactly.
Yankees to win got 16 votes, Marlins to win got 12 votes.
Number of games: 4 (3 votes), 5 (5 votes), 6 (16 votes), 7 (5 votes)
Whoever
gets it right will win absolutely nothing, but I'll mention them
on this page somewhere, so that's gotta be worth something(?).
The
other silly question last week was how bad does it suck to be a Cuns
fan? The majority of you answered "Whoo Boy, it sucks bad!"
(13 votes). 8 said "It really sucks", while 4 of
us responded "Too depressed to answer", although
by actually answering with that answer were seemingly not
too depressed to answer after all. There's no way to count those who
actually WERE too depressed to answer and proved it by not answering.
